Whilst it appears these findings from across the water are in the early stages there is no harm in making sure your babies gums are “clean” and free from as much “sugar” as possible. We may as well start them young to get them into good habits of brushing & flossing and help them keep their teeth & smile for life!

Scientists are urging parents to start caring for their gums much earlier, after finding hundreds of species of bacteria in the mouths of infants. The study from the University of Illinois focused on babies who didn’t yet have any teeth, compared to most studies that looked at older children who already had dental cavities.

The team, led by Professor Kelly Swanson, used DNA technology to examine the whole population of bacteria in their mouths. They found it was far more diverse that suspected, making cavities more likely.

‘Like many other diseases, dental cavities are a result of many bacteria in a community, not just one pathogen,’ Prof Swanson said.

He added: ‘We now recognise that the ‘window of infectivity,’ which was thought to occur between 19 and 33 months of age years ago, really occurs at a much younger age.’

Janet Clarke, a spokesperson for the British Dental Association, said: ‘The research looks interesting but further investigation is necessary to ascertain the significance of these findings.

‘The important issue for parents to remember is to minimise their baby’s exposure to sugary foods and drinks from the time they are weaned on to solids.

‘Ideally, it is best to avoid adding sugar to bottle feeds or drinks, however, the real danger to teeth arises from prolonged or frequent contact with sugar so sipping on sugary feeds or drinks for hours, or overnight, is a definite no-no.

‘Having a drink of juice from a cup in one sitting is better than sucking it over several hours from a bottle or carton because the mouth releases acid that causes decay for about 20 minutes after each sugar-eating episode.’

1). What causes tooth stains?

There are a variety of reasons for tooth stains. In the main these are are caused by the things we consume in our lives as well as antibiotics taken as children. A gradual build up of plaque which if not brushed, cleaned and flossed regularly ‘sticks’ to the tooth and over time if not removed causes stains on the enamel. These surface stains can penetrate the enamel which means they can then discolour the dentin found underneath and become intrinsic tooth stains. Unfortunately dentin is porous so it absorbs stains more. As we age our enamel erodes, or gets thinner and you can therefore see the stained dentin more clearly.

2). You can only whiten your teeth back to their natural shade

This is true, and it is best to know to avoid disappointment. You can only whiten your teeth back to their natural shade, you cannot change your genetics. For example people with yellow teeth will still see them discolour over time, however whitening your teeth you can remove these added stains

3). Teeth whitening does not etch or erode your tooth enamel

The enamel of the tooth gets thinner as we age, and it is why our teeth appear ‘less white’ (see point 1). Tooth bleaching or whitening does not erode the enamel. Studies over many years have shown that drinking fizzy drinks is far worse.

So i started stopping a few people and asking them why they thought this was happening, and then i realised that people are embarrassed to smile.

They are it’s true, the Brits are not like the American’s, have you noticed on TV when ever you see an American how white their teeth are? Americans are proud of their oral care, they look after their teeth and gums, and tongues for that matter. It maybe that they have had access to better products, more affordable products or the Government has been more forthcoming with the concerns about oral hygiene.

It is only more recently in the UK that we are being made aware that we need to look after our pearly whites, the reason is simply; we get one set of teeth, well two if your going to argue! Yet our teeth unlike the rest of our body do not repair, and now god dam it we are all living longer! So we had better look our nashers.

Anyway i digress a question for you, Do you smile? Be honest how often do you really smile, of for that matter laugh properly?

How does it make you feel, relaxed, happy, of course it does. Smiling relaxes the body, it relieves tension and eases stress and reduces blood pressure, you get all that just for a smile.

Vivid
The original ‘Classic’ rebadged and lengthened. Made from the original single layer technology Vivid at 6.5% strength are the best option for people with mild yellow tooth stain. You get 10 days of home teeth whitening

Our Opinion: For people with just a little tooth discolouration then Vivid will be fine, 10 days is long enough to lighten by several shades. They are not ideal for people with ‘dull teeth’ as these are often the hardest to whiten, and Supreme would be the preferred choice. These are the cheapest of the ‘professional level’ whitening products £34.99.

Gentle Routine
Staying with single layer of tooth whitening strip Gentle Routine are the first product in the range specifically for those with sensitive teeth. The treatment time is reduced to just 5 minutes a day however you get 28 strips so the total whitening treatment is longer and however it is a more gradual process.

Our Opinion: Long overdue, Crest Whitestrips Gentle Routine are a great addition to the range. Sensible whitening for those with sensitivity issues, don’t worry about the whitening Gentle Routine work just the same, it just takes slightly longer. £36.99. Recommended for those with sensitivity issues, I also recommend the use of a sensitive toothpaste to give you total protection. You don’t need the non slip strips as the whitening period is only 5 minutes at a time

Stain Shield
Staying with the 5 minute whitening treatment time, Stain Shield are a really good concept and addition to the range. These single layer strips offer a daily protection against further tooth stains. The answer is simple – you should be able to get back to your natural tooth shade – whatever that was.

These are the facts…

You are born with a shade of tooth, thats it you’ve got that shade for life, unlucky or of course lucky for some unless you can afford veneers!

So what happens is that during our life our teeth discolour through a variety of reasons, this could be anything from antibiotics taken as a child, fizzy drinks (which are terrible for tooth stains), tea & coffee, red wine, curries, smoking, drugs and general diet etc. However here is the good news - in the main, by using a home teeth whitening kit you can remove these stains.

The strength and length of tooth bleaching required for each person is different, and it is up to the individual to analyse what has caused the tooth discolouration and then determine the strength and type of treatment that will be required, indeed talk to your dentist for further advice. The obvious statement here is that, the more yellow or discoloured your teeth are the stronger and longer a teeth whitening treatment you will require. I will also add at this point that ‘dull’ teeth can sometimes be more difficult to whiten and often two whitening treatments maybe required.

As you start the teeth whitening process the stains are gradually ‘bleached’ treatment by treatment, they will get slowly whiter and brighter. We would always recommend taking a before and after picture for your own personal records. You keep whitening until you reach a plateau, which in theory will be close to your natural shade, not fake.

The important thing then is to maintain that shade by regular brushing with an electric toothbrush, a whitening toothpaste and don’t forget flossing.

All tooth stains can be bleached, whitened and lightened – and the process is harmless although some people do get tooth sensitivity. This can range from a mild tingling sensation to in the worst cases severe stabbing pains and acute sensitivity. In the latter case stop use immediately and consult your dentist. The sensitivity is a temporary experience and it is not permanent. Precautions can be taken such as using a sensitive toothpaste, like Sensodyne, or using a de-sensitising gel prior to and during use. Tooth whitening will not damage your tooth enamel, it will not erode your enamel, however it will whiten your teeth.
