Fizzy Drinks

Dark colored sodas are not only staining, but are also full of harmful phosphoric, citric acids and sugars that erode tooth enamel and cause tooth decay, which leads to a dull, ugly smile. Since most people like their soda cold, this creates further dental problems. Cold drinks make tooth enamel more porous and vulnerable to staining. If you’re not ready to give up your soda habit, then at least drink it through a straw, to minimize contact with your teeth.

Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice and other dark colored fruit juices are highly pigmented and can cause yellowing of the teeth. Cranberry juice contains very high amounts of sugar in order to offset its natural bitter taste and as we all know, sugar isn’t very good for teeth. Drink it through a straw or rinse your mouth out with some water after drinking it. You could also switch to drinking white cranberry juice or other lighter colored fruit juices.

Iced Lolly’s

Popsicles are a colorful summertime favorite, but those dyes that color your lips and tongue funny colors are also staining your teeth. Plus, they’re full of sugar and the cold iciness opens up the porous surface of your tooth enamel, which causes even worse staining. If you want a sweet summer treat, try freezing some fresh fruit- frozen grapes are my favorite.

Soy Sauce

It may be good on rice, but it isn’t good on your teeth. Soy sauce sticks to teeth and its deep colored pigments can cause bad stains. So, go easy on the soy sauce, the next time you’re at the sushi bar and rinse your mouth out with some water or green tea after eating it.

Balsamic Vinegar

Balsamic vinegar is a lot like soy sauce- it is deeply pigmented, clings to teeth and causes tooth discoloration. You could pair it with lettuce, by drizzling it over your salad. Lettuce forms a protective barrier over teeth to help keep them free from stains. You could also switch to using a lighter colored vinegar.

Tomato Sauce / Tomatoes

Italian food would just be a bunch of tasteless carbs without it. Tomato sauce is highly acidic and much like soy sauce and balsamic vinegar, clings to teeth and causes stains. You could have a spinach salad before eating your pasta or pizza. Much like lettuce, spinach will form a protective film over your teeth, helping to keep them free from stains.

Blueberries

Blueberries are excellent for your overall health and are jam packed with nutrients and antioxidants, which are very helpful for maintaining strong and healthy teeth. However, that deep berry blue can cause deep staining on your teeth, so be sure to rinse your mouth out thoroughly with water.

KEY TIP TO REMEMBER:- One of the most important facts to remember (but often forgotten) is that you can only whiten your teeth back to their natural shade, whatever that was, as tooth shade is biological.

1). What causes tooth stains?

Tooth Stain Before and After

There are a variety of reasons for tooth stains. In the main these are are caused by the things we consume in our lives as well as antibiotics taken as children. A gradual build up of plaque which if not brushed, cleaned and flossed regularly ‘sticks’ to the tooth and over time if not removed causes stains on the enamel. These surface stains can penetrate the enamel which means they can then discolour the dentin found underneath and become intrinsic tooth stains. Unfortunately dentin is porous so it absorbs stains more. As we age our enamel erodes, or gets thinner and you can therefore see the stained dentin more clearly.

2). You can only whiten your teeth back to their natural shade

This is true, and it is best to know to avoid disappointment. You can only whiten your teeth back to their natural shade, you cannot change your genetics. For example people with yellow teeth will still see them discolour over time, however whitening your teeth you can remove these added stains

3). Teeth whitening does not etch or erode your tooth enamel

The enamel of the tooth gets thinner as we age, and it is why our teeth appear ‘less white’ (see point 1). Tooth bleaching or whitening does not erode the enamel. Studies over many years have shown that drinking fizzy drinks is far worse.

4). Do not leave Crest Whitestrips or Teeth Whitening kits on overnight

Once the oxidisation process has taken place there is little point in leaving the strips or trays in for any longer. Whilst originally it was thought that leaving them in overnight helped, recent studies show little or no advantage at the completion of the teeth whitening process

5). How long do the whitening results last for?

Most home teeth whitening kits results last for 12 -18 months. Once you have had your teeth whitened with a professional home teeth whitening kit like Crest Whitestrips, then regular brushing with a ‘whitening’ toothpaste, flossing and cleaning, should insure that your teeth remain whiter for longer.

Advanced Vivid
Again benefitting from the non slip technology the two main differences in comparison with Professional Effects are the slightly smaller lower strip for people with narrower front teeth and 14 days of whitening treatment rather than 20. They are the same 10% strength.

Our Opinion: Perhaps those with darker tooth stains should stick with Professional Effects or Supreme as you get the extra weeks worth of teeth whitening. However for those with normal dark yellow, yellow tooth stains these are brilliant. Don’t worry too much about the lower strips being narrower they will cover most of the bottom set. Best Value at £42.99

Vivid
The original ‘Classic’ rebadged and lengthened. Made from the original single layer technology Vivid at 6.5% strength are the best option for people with mild yellow tooth stain. You get 10 days of home teeth whitening

Our Opinion: For people with just a little tooth discolouration then Vivid will be fine, 10 days is long enough to lighten by several shades. They are not ideal for people with ‘dull teeth’ as these are often the hardest to whiten, and Supreme would be the preferred choice. These are the cheapest of the ‘professional level’ whitening products £34.99.

Gentle Routine
Staying with single layer of tooth whitening strip Gentle Routine are the first product in the range specifically for those with sensitive teeth. The treatment time is reduced to just 5 minutes a day however you get 28 strips so the total whitening treatment is longer and however it is a more gradual process.

Our Opinion: Long overdue, Crest Whitestrips Gentle Routine are a great addition to the range. Sensible whitening for those with sensitivity issues, don’t worry about the whitening Gentle Routine work just the same, it just takes slightly longer. £36.99. Recommended for those with sensitivity issues, I also recommend the use of a sensitive toothpaste to give you total protection. You don’t need the non slip strips as the whitening period is only 5 minutes at a time

Staying with the 5 minute whitening treatment time, Stain Shield are a really good concept and addition to the range. These single layer strips offer a daily protection against further tooth stains. If you suffer from discoloured teeth or you just want whiter teeth and a great smile, then this is very important information you should know

This is a highly recommended plan to get your white teeth, and keep them white.

Month 1 – Initial Teeth Whitening

1. Take a photo of your teeth
2. Start using a whitening toothpaste immediately. This will prevent ‘daily’ stains – it will not generally whiten your teeth but it will remove any surface stains that occur each day.
3. Start to use your selected professional home teeth whitening kit, whether thats a whitening tray version or crest whitening strip, which ever your preference is to suit your lifestyle.
4. Continue to brush your teeth at least twice per day and for at least 2 minutes with a whitening toothpaste
5. Floss once a day as this help you stop the build up of tartar and plaque which can cause gum disease and decay as we age (and we are living longer)
6. Use a mouth rinse containing fluoride once or twice per week.
7. Take a photo of your teeth
8. Visit your dentist every 3 – 6 months

Month 2 +

1. Repeat steps 3,4,5,6 and 7 every week / month.
